We have the Honeywell Home RTH9600WF Smart Color Thermostat and couldn't be happier with our choice. This is an investment well worth it and you can't imagine how quick you'll make your money back while using it. Just a matter of a few months on the electricity bill. Check it out HERE

2. LED light bulbs

LED light bulbs are energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan compared to traditional incandescent bulbs. They consume less electricity, which can significantly reduce your lighting costs over time.

A small amount, especially when bought in bulk, of $30 for 24 light bulbs or c. $1.20-$1.30/ per piece can help you save up to 85% on your energy bill and will last you up to 10 years. We use these Sylvania ones that come in a Value Pack in the Soft White options and absolutely love them. Check them out HERE

3. Reusable water bottle

Investing in a reusable water bottle can help you cut down on the expense of purchasing bottled water and reduce plastic waste.

Case studies have shown that by switching from plastic bottles to a reusable water bottle each American saves c. $260 annually. The easiest money-saving solution is to buy one reusable bottle and get back its value with a couple of weeks of use. There are many readily available choices in almost any retail store. You can find reusable neoprene, glass or stainless steel bottles easily online. I am a huge fan of the Brita brand and was recently gifted their Premium Filtered Water Bottle that I use every single day. You can find it HERE

4. Reusable shopping bags

Bringing reusable shopping bags to the grocery store is a simple and eco-friendly choice that also saves you money on plastic or paper bag fees. By using reusable bags, you avoid the extra expenses and can redirect those savings towards your financial goals. Additionally, this small change contributes to a more sustainable lifestyle, reducing plastic waste and promoting a greener environment for the future.

A couple of years ago, I saw the mom of one of my son's friends, carrying a big but oh so cute tote basket at the playground one day. Mind you, she is a mom of four kids under 10, so she must have a lot to carry. This "shopping bag" was so adorable that I couldn't resist asking her about it, and I ended up buying one for myself. It's truly the best tote I've ever had!

I now have 2 of the CleverMade SnapBaskets and use them ALL the time. These pop-up baskets can be used to carry groceries or for food delivery, and their thermal insulation keeps groceries cold and casseroles warm. They are the perfect carriers for picnics, potlucks, and dinner parties. Two of these baskets fit all my groceries, and they are extremely durable as I've been using them for over two years now. (Please don't judge me, but they also double as my beach bags in the summer.) These baskets are practical and easy to store, while also looking great. I have the Geometric Taupe and the Cheetah designs and they are made of Vegan Leather which is also a plus in my book.

5. Energy-efficient appliances

Energy-efficient appliances, like refrigerators, washing machines, and dishwashers, consume less electricity, resulting in lower utility bills. The benefits of using such appliances are tangible and can be seen as soon as the next electricity bill arrives. Opt for ENERGY STAR-certified appliances, as they not only promise to be eco-friendly but are also designed to save energy and ultimately reduce our utility costs.

6. Solar-powered chargers

Solar-powered chargers utilize the sun's energy to charge electronic devices like smartphones and tablets, reducing electricity consumption and saving money on charging costs.

To be honest, I wasn't even aware that something like this existed until very recently when a friend of ours, who is an avid camper, told us about the effectiveness and energy efficiency of these portable solar power banks. Check them our for yourself HERE

7. Smart power strips

Smart power strips automatically cut off power to devices when they are not in use, preventing "phantom" energy usage and lowering your electricity bill.

We were thrilled to say goodbye to the energy vampires that silently drained power even when devices were turned off. Moreover, the power strips allowed us to create custom schedules for devices like our entertainment system and computers, ensuring that they weren't left running when not needed. Oh how I like these little suckers! Check them out HERE

8. Insulated lunch box

Embracing the practice of packing your lunch into an insulated lunch box offers a two-fold advantage: it not only supports your budget but also promotes healthier eating habits. By preparing your own meals and carrying them with you, you're effectively sidestepping the financial drain of dining out during work or school hours. The convenience of having your homemade lunch ready and waiting means you're less likely to succumb to the temptation of pricey takeout or restaurant meals. This small shift in routine can yield significant financial benefits in the long run, allowing you to allocate those saved funds toward more meaningful goals.

In our family, we all have our own lunch boxes and special insulated food jars for soups and veggies. George and I each use a Thermos insulated 16oz jar for hot meals, like soups and casseroles, and the kids have their own cool Thermos 10oz jars with fun designs. And let me tell you, we all really love using them. Chris is especially excited about his Batman jar and he often asks for specific foods just so he can take it to school. These containers are budget-friendly, costing less than $20, and they're built to last for years, making them a smart investment. The same goes for our lunch boxes from PackIt, the classic freezable lunch boxes that are simply fantastic. I often come across lunch boxes online, some priced at $50 or even more. Honestly, I can't quite fathom what extra features they could possibly provide compared to the budget-friendly options we currently use. The PackIt lunch boxes are designed with built-in cooling that can keep food and drinks chilled for a long time. This means I can confidently pack dairy, meats, salads, and fruits in the kids' lunches, even on warm days. These lunch boxes have truly changed our lunch routine for the better, making it super easy to pack healthy meals and drinks and has made our daily meals much smoother and more enjoyable for the whole family. 10. Water-saving showerhead

Did you know that the average American family uses a whopping 40 gallons of water every day just from taking showers? But there's good news – you can make a significant impact by making a simple change. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, switching to a certified low-flow shower head could save your family around 2,700 gallons of water every year. There are special shower heads that are designed to use less water while still providing a satisfying shower experience – they do this by either mixing air with the water or using a high-speed stream. Not only is a water-saving shower head great for the environment, but it's also a smart choice for your wallet. When you use less water, you end up saving money on your water bill and even on the energy needed to heat up that water. The best part is, you don't have to sacrifice a strong, enjoyable shower – the top low-flow shower heads still deliver a powerful spray.

As part of our commitment to living a greener lifestyle and cutting down on utility costs, George and I took a step forward by upgrading our shower heads. We wanted to make our home more sustainable while enjoying the benefits of money savings. We decided to make a water-conscious choice by switching to low-flow shower heads – a decision that we haven't regretted. After careful consideration, we opted for the KOHLER 22169-CP Forte Multifunction Showerhead, and it has truly exceeded our expectations. With its three adjustable settings, this shower head offers just the right amount of water flow for a great shower experience.

11. Rainwater harvesting system

Exploring the practice of collecting rainwater to nourish your plants and garden presents a clever strategy to minimize your water bills, especially during the parched periods when every drop counts. By setting up a rainwater harvesting system, you're not only being environmentally conscious but also making a practical choice that can save you money in the long run. The process involves capturing rainwater from your roof or other surfaces and storing it in barrels or tanks for later use in watering your outdoor greenery.

Especially when you have a garden like we do and you grow some vegetables, a rainwater collection system will work wonders for you. We have twice installed the Oatey Mystic Rainwater Collection System, which has led to the setup of two distinct barrels for water collection and is a very affordable solution. It's a sustainable loop that benefits both your wallet and the ecosystem. As the rainwater cascades from the sky and fills your barrels, you're essentially creating a reservoir of water that can be tapped into when the weather turns dry and conventional water sources become costly to consume. So, in the spirit of resourcefulness and conservation, consider setting up a rainwater collection system – your plants will thrive, and your water bills will thank you.

12. Electric kettle

Opting for an electric kettle over boiling water on the stove is a smart move not only for convenience but also for cost savings. Electric kettles are designed with energy efficiency in mind, using just the right amount of electricity needed to bring water to a boil quickly. This efficiency translates to reduced energy consumption, which in turn leads to lower electricity bills. By harnessing the power of technology to efficiently heat water, you're not only being kinder to the environment but also ensuring that your budget benefits from the energy-conscious choice you've made. So, whether it's for your morning cup of tea or a quick pasta dinner, choosing an electric kettle can be a small but impactful step toward more economical and eco-friendly living.

13. Budgeting apps

Whether you're aiming to reign in spending, build an emergency fund, or save for that dream vacation, these apps provide the tools to create customized budgets, categorize your expenses, and monitor your progress. By embracing technology as your financial partner, you're not just simplifying the budgeting process; you're unleashing the potential to make wiser financial decisions and achieve your goals with greater confidence.

14. Prepaid phone plans

Transitioning to a prepaid phone plan offers you a strategic approach to managing your phone-related expenditures while sidestepping the pitfalls of excessive data usage and call costs. These plans grant you the power to wield full control over your phone expenses, allowing you to allocate a predetermined budget for your communication needs. By prepaying for your services, you eliminate the risk of unexpected overages or hidden charges, ensuring that you stay firmly within your financial boundaries. Additionally, prepaid plans often offer customizable options, letting you choose the amount of data, talk time, and texts that align with your usage patterns. This proactive approach to phone expenses not only prevents financial surprises but also empowers you to make more informed choices about how you utilize your phone services.

15. Refillable ink cartridges

Opting for ink cartridge refilling instead of purchasing new ones can be a savvy move when it comes to your printing requirements. This choice holds the potential to save you significant amounts of money over time. Instead of shelling out for brand-new cartridges, you're extending the life of your existing ones by refilling them with fresh ink. Not only does this approach cut down on your printing costs, but it's also an environmentally conscious choice, reducing waste and minimizing the number of cartridges that end up in landfills. By embracing ink cartridge refilling, you're aligning frugality with sustainability, a smart strategy that benefits both your wallet and the planet.

16. Home gardening supplies

Embarking on your own homegrown produce journey can have a substantial impact on your grocery budget. Cultivating fruits, vegetables, and herbs in your garden or even in small indoor spaces offers a bounty of benefits. Not only do you have access to fresh, flavorful ingredients at your fingertips, but you also sidestep the need to purchase these items from the store. The savings can be quite significant, especially when you consider the cumulative cost of store-bought produce over time. By nurturing your own edible garden, you're not just savoring the taste of homegrown goodness, but you're also nurturing your financial well-being with each home-harvested bite.

17. Compost Bin

Engaging in the practice of composting kitchen waste yields both ecological and financial rewards. Instead of discarding food scraps and organic materials, you're channeling them into a process that not only minimizes landfill waste but also generates nutrient-rich compost. This compost serves as a natural and cost-effective alternative to store-bought fertilizers. By enriching your garden soil with this homemade compost, you're fostering a thriving environment for your plants to flourish. Not only does this contribute to the health and vibrancy of your garden, but it also trims down your expenses by eliminating the need for store-bought fertilizers. With each scoop of kitchen waste transformed into nutrient gold, you're nurturing not only your garden but also your budget-conscious gardening journey.

George's enthusiasm for gardening is hard to miss. His current project involves nurturing a vibrant vegetable garden that features an assortment of crops: spinach, radishes, zucchini, and tomatoes. While I'm unsure about any recent additions to his garden, there's definitely an exciting newcomer – a Compost Bin. This innovative inclusion has certainly ignited his passion. Specifically, he's now the proud owner of the FCMP Outdoor Dual Chamber Tumbling Composter, a choice that has elevated his gardening experience to new heights. The joy and satisfaction he derives from this addition are palpable and speak volumes about his dedication to his gardening endeavors.

18. A Quality Coffee Machine

Investing in a high-quality coffee machine can prove to be a savvy financial decision in the long run. While the initial cost might be higher, the savings you accrue over time are substantial. Say goodbye to daily trips to expensive coffee shops and the temptation of grabbing pricey specialty beverages on the go. With a top-notch coffee machine at your disposal, you can brew your favorite coffee beverages in the comfort of your home, tailored to your exact taste preferences. The convenience of having a cafe-worthy coffee experience at your fingertips not only saves money but also enhances your daily routine. Plus, you'll have the flexibility to experiment with different coffee beans and flavors, creating an experience that's both cost-effective and deeply satisfying. So, consider it an investment not just in coffee, but in your wallet's well-being and your morning joy.

Save money by brewing coffee at home instead of buying expensive drinks from coffee shops.

You'll be shocked by the numbers. If you drink coffee every day, you’ll be spending at least $3.65, the cost of a Starbucks latte. That’s $25.55 per week, which is $1328,6 a year.

By buying Union coffee beans ($115.00 for 6.6lbs which should last a year) and the best and my favorite espresso maker (Breville's The Barista Pro, which is $849.95); you'd still have $363.65 left over. That will more than cover the cost of running a coffee maker (electricity will cost $3 and water will be similar). Espresso makers should last at least five years, so you will be saving at least $5,200 over the course of five years. That’s money you'll want to keep.

With a trusty thread and needle at your disposal, you're armed to resurrect these pieces and infuse them with new life.

This practice isn't just about saving your clothes; it's also a savvy strategy for curbing the need for frequent replacements and the accompanying costs. By making this deliberate choice, you're effectively diminishing the demand for the continuous purchase and disposal of disposable batteries.

The advantages extend beyond the initial reduction in environmental impact and waste accumulation. Rechargeable batteries, with their durability and ability to be revitalized multiple times, exhibit a higher level of resource efficiency compared to their disposable counterparts. This translates into a reduction in the extraction of raw materials and the energy expended in manufacturing processes.

Consider the broader context of your ecological footprint: the process of extracting, producing, packaging, and transporting batteries contributes to carbon emissions and further depletes finite resources. By adopting rechargeable batteries, you're interrupting this cycle and contributing to a more sustainable energy paradigm.

While the upfront cost of rechargeable batteries might be slightly higher, the potential for savings becomes evident over time as you circumvent the recurring expense of purchasing disposable batteries. This economic benefit, combined with the ecological impact, underscores the wisdom of embracing rechargeable batteries as a holistic solution.

It is an ingenious key that not only grants entry to a realm of knowledge and imagination but also has the power to significantly alleviate the financial strain of entertainment expenditures.

The scope of benefits extends far beyond the confines of borrowing books alone. With a library card in hand, you're bestowed with the privilege of borrowing a diverse array of materials, including movies and music, without incurring any costs. This translates into a substantial reduction in the funds that would otherwise be channeled into purchasing or renting such forms of entertainment. Moreover, the library card transforms into a gateway to exploration, where you can delve into cinematic worlds or immerse yourself in the harmonies of various musical genres, all without the accompanying price tags. The implications are profound, as you curate your leisure moments with an array of options that are both enriching and financially prudent.

Considering the broader context, the act of borrowing instead of buying fosters a culture of sustainability. By minimizing these environmental impacts, you're contributing to a more responsible and eco-friendly lifestyle.

24. Online cooking classes or recipes

Discovering free or budget-friendly online cooking classes and recipes can serve as a transformative gateway to mastering the culinary arts within the comfort of your own kitchen. The abundance of virtual resources, from instructional videos to step-by-step recipes, means you can explore diverse cuisines and techniques, all while drastically reducing your dependence on costly restaurant meals.

By harnessing the wealth of online culinary content, you're effectively reclaiming control over your food choices and budget. The financial advantage of preparing meals at home cannot be overstated – it not only trims dining expenses but also promotes healthier eating habits. Armed with a variety of accessible tutorials and delectable recipes, you're equipped to whip up restaurant-quality dishes that cater to your preferences and dietary needs. This culinary journey offers a dual reward: savoring homemade delights that rival those of professional chefs while simultaneously reaping the financial benefits of a prudent and sustainable approach to dining.

25. Home workout equipment

Allocating resources to acquire home workout equipment can result in substantial savings by circumventing the need for recurring gym membership fees. In a landscape where fitness centers often come with ongoing costs, this strategic move not only facilitates regular exercise but also presents a fiscally responsible alternative. The availability of diverse exercise apparatus for home use ensures that you can engage in a comprehensive workout regimen without the financial burden of monthly membership payments.

Through the judicious selection of home workout equipment, you're effectively establishing a personalized fitness sanctuary that aligns with your preferences and schedule. This financial investment translates into both tangible and intangible gains. Not only are you reducing your monthly expenditures, but you're also embracing a lifestyle that prioritizes convenience, self-sufficiency, and consistent physical well-being. The allure of bypassing crowded gyms and adhering to a routine from the comfort of your own space is complemented by the economic wisdom of evading the costs typically associated with traditional gym memberships.

After my second son was born, losing the extra pregnancy weight was hard, and I didn't have much time for exercise. So, I set up a treadmill in my garage. I started working out when the baby was napping during the day. My family and I still use it a few times a week, and it has definitely been worth the money. I manage to get my workouts in two or three times a week, considering I love running. If I had gone to the gym, I would have paid $50 every month. It took less than two years for the treadmill to pay for itself. Mine is the NordicTrack T Series, but honestly, any treadmill would do the job.

Transitioning to energy-efficient windows and bolstering insulation doesn't just enhance your home, it's a strategic move with a range of benefits. Chief among them is the significant reduction in heating and cooling costs, offering both financial savings and environmental advantages.

Energy-efficient windows employ advanced technologies to regulate indoor temperatures, curbing excessive energy usage for heating or cooling. They also safeguard interiors from sun damage. Paired with quality insulation, these upgrades create a climate-controlled environment that eases strain on HVAC systems. This translates to lower energy bills and a reduced carbon footprint. Additionally, research by the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that household furnishings and equipment constitute a significant portion of consumer expenditures. Opting for secondhand furniture can lead to noteworthy cost reductions, allowing you to obtain quality pieces at a fraction of the cost of new ones.

Websites such as eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and local thrift stores offer a plethora of options for secondhand purchases. These platforms enable you to find pre-loved items that are still in great condition, often with unique character that new items lack. Financially, the upfront cost of a high-quality menstrual cup is usually higher than a single box of disposable products. However, the longevity of these cups is remarkable; with proper care, a single cup can last for years. This translates to significant savings over time, as you won't need to keep purchasing disposable products month after month.
